Navigated Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (nTMS)

Traumatic brain injury has substantial effects that can be very challenging for patients and families. We understand that brain injury patients are eager to receive treatment and we at Institute for Nerve Medicine (INM) offer neuro-navigated DTI-guided transcranial magnetic stimulation (nTMS). Our TMS treatments are intended to help patients reduce brain injury symptoms they are experiencing. Non-invasive brain stimulation has been shown to be ameliorative and may slow the rate of future decline.
For more than 35 years, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has shown promise in the diagnosis and treatment of neurological and psychiatric disorders. As a non-drug approach, nTMS only influences brain activity and does not alter body chemistry in other parts of the body.
Unlike many others, our nTMS treatments are designed to target specific areas of the brain that show damage in the DTI (advanced brain MRI) scan. If you or your loved ones are experiencing any of these symptoms, TMS may help to reduce these symptoms:
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Increased anger and irritability
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Insomnia
  • Pain
  • Headaches
  • Problems with balance
  • Tinnitus
  • Movement disorders
  • Speech problems
  • Cognitive impairment
While traditional TMS has been offered once a day for consecutive days, we offer accelerated TMS treatments where multiple TMS sessions can be accomplished in a condensed time format if it is right for the patient.
At INM, our TMS system is integrated with E-field navigation which uses decades of scientific research to help diagnose and treat the brain noninvasively. With DTI-neuronavigated transcranial magnetic stimulation (nTMS), a magnetic field is briefly generated in a handheld coil passes harmlessly and noninvasively down into the brain and creates a small electric field in the outer layer (cortex) of the brain and the target is personalized based off patient’s DTI results.
nTMS treatment is solidly grounded in scientific and clinical research and harnesses the brain's own healing power- neuroplasticity. Our TMS technology uses the science of healing electromagnetic waves to help the brain repair itself. Every treatment is personalized to the patient's own brain anatomy and medical situation.
At INM, we believe it is essential that nTMS accurately stimulates the targeted location in the brain - otherwise, patients may not get the benefit they truly need. Every nTMS treatment offers a measured an individualized dose of TMS, an unrivaled level of accuracy as demanded by brain surgeons, treatment sessions personalized for the patient's own brain, assurance the patient received their prescribed dose, and unsurpassed safety and comfort.
The TMS field has grown substantially over the past two decades. TMS was first FDA cleared for treating major depressive disorder (MDD) in 2008 in adults who have not responded to prior antidepressant medications. Since then, the clinical utility of TMS has broadened. For example, in 2017 TMS was cleared for the acute and prophylactic of migraine headache with aura, also in 2017 OCD was cleared. New pulse parameters like theta burst stimulation have demonstrated utility in improving TMS therapeutic effects and in 2018 the use of theta burst stimulation for the treatment of MDD in adults failing to improve symptoms with antidepressant medication was cleared.
We at INM are committed to furthering the application of TMS to make it accessible to those with conditions treatable by this technology.
